Tunisian cuisine is excellent and in the restaurants of Tunis you will find an abundance of meat as well as fish. The predominant meat to be eaten is lamb, and this being a Muslim country, you will not find pork. Lamb, Seabream and fresh fish in general, olive oil…this is a Mediterranean cuisine with its own particular personality.
Cous cous is an extremely popular dish here as in other North African countries. Another specialty is a tagine of stuffed fried eggs served on sweet bread. In international restaurants, all kinds of European cuisines are served. The proximity to Italy means that some Italian dishes are also common here, for example fresh pasta.
It may be surprising to find that there are several excellent wines produced in Tunisia, despite being a Muslim country.
